I WRITE movies with female heroes, female villains, and female supporting roles...and I'm often heartbroken when they get changed or when they don't get made at all.

Sadly, a lot of the thinking is based on raw statistics. Granted there is a chicken and egg problem here...but I think audiences (particularly male audiences) are at least half to blame, when the don't show up at the theater for female-driven movies. There are plenty of us writers (both women and men) who keep writing strong female parts.Sean Hoodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06231519321386029271noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8449788510648805968.post-51147395557994426862012-02-29T12:50:39.323-08:002012-02-29T12:50:39.323-08:00This is a complete cop out and reeks of some kind ...This is a complete cop out and reeks of some kind of high school "boys club" !! It wasn't that long ago that they used the same excuses to justify not having minorities in movies...("the people dont want at see...!!! or the public just isn't ready for...!!) Any one see The Alien Trilogy with Sigourney Weaver? How about Thelma & Louise with Susan Sarandon & Geena Davis? Monster with Charlize Theron & Christina Ricci? Million Dollar Baby with Hilary Swank? Women leads work and can make serious money when they are written well, directed well and promoted properly! And thats the point. Most writers, producers, & directors, studio exes are male and as a result are happy to feed the audience any number of crappy films with male leads because THEY as MEN, THINK MEN are more "interesting" to watch! The public can't watch/support what the studios don't make!!TraceyMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12036906969363428824noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8449788510648805968.post-60245771606444286562012-02-26T06:53:47.140-08:002012-02-26T06:53:47.140-08:00It is so sad that we've inherited a culture th...It is so sad that we've inherited a culture that doesn't take women seriously enough to envision them as leads, side-kick characters, etc. I feel so lost in my culture.Suzzzannehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17400117474985703360noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8449788510648805968.post-13153280134289998732011-12-28T14:33:06.285-08:002011-12-28T14:33:06.285-08:00Jessica...Ultimately, I don't think screenwrit...Jessica...Ultimately, I don't think screenwriters should change. We write the stories that intrigue us, and if those stories include female protagonists, that's what we should write. We can also do our best to promote films that have more complex characters and more universal subjects that don't relegate women to "romance."Sean Hoodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06231519321386029271noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8449788510648805968.post-47495141922521050662011-12-28T03:33:28.296-08:002011-12-28T03:33:28.296-08:00I'm sure you're right about all this and y...I'm sure you're right about all this and yet I find this post incredibly depressing.

Is there any way we can change the fact that movies with female protagonists don't make well in the box offices?

I understand why the market rules and why the screenwriters need to adapt but yet... I want a change. Will I get it in my lifetime?

:(Jessicahttp://www.thevelvetcafe.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.com
